Similar to Intranet, an Extranet is a local network that is also accessible to specific outside users or businesses. However, it is still not accessible to the general public. Although a user may have access to an extranet, the extranet may only display information that he or she is privileged to see and only allow access to specific sections of the extranet.
An Intranet is a private network that can only be accessed within a company, university, or organization. Unlike the Internet where a page may be accessible by anyone connected to the Internet, an Intranet is a local internet that only allows members to access the pages and is protected from any other users not part of that intranet.
LAN (Local-Area Network). A small network of computers, usually in the same home or office block.
WAN
(Wide Area Network). A large area of computers and network resources connected via a network over a geographic area.
MAN (Metropolitan-Area Network). A MAN is larger than the standard Local-Area Network (LAN) but smaller than a Wide Area Network (WAN) and commonly is used in Universities where buildings in the same area use the same network. |
