Normanton Town Middle School
A committee was set up in August 1891 to re-establish a grammar school. They had funds available from the seventeenth-century will of John Freeston, and also £1,000 recently bequeathed by Thomas Ward. Local donations raised an additional £2,000.
The school was built on a area of land in the town called Mill Flat Field. Three acres were purchased for £750 from the vicar of Normanton.
The school was completed by 1897, at a total cost of £3,000. Mr C. W. Atkinson was the first headmaster. In 1905 it was enlarged, that year Mr C. E. Brittian became head when Mr Atkinson moved to another post.
The only remaining feature of the original school is the bell tower, which is sadly no longer in use today.
